People who do sex work don't stop being human beings just because of their occupation. They're individuals, with dreams and ideals, storied lives, childhoods, insecurities. It's just not realistic to assume they need to give up on any concept of cuteness or fluffiness in their lives, forever. It's sex (kinda, professional pornography is not even remotely like real sex), and it does matter, and it does have a tangible effect on the way they will treat and be treated in the future. It's ultimately just a job though, doesn't even pay super well anymore unless you're top 1% on OF.
While you don't need a sob story to make sex work morally acceptable, it is an industry fraught with coercion and cruelty. Many of the people who are in adult films, who do escort work, and especially prostitutes, are vulnerable individuals being taken advantage of. Here's a pertinent link about
Survival Sex and the fact is that even in developed countries like Japan and developing countries like the United States, there are people who are trafficked and put through these industries, including porn. Not even infrequently, there are tens of thousands of people sex trafficked in the US yearly (that we know about). Slightly over half of them are children. Not related to this work, just saying, a lot of those kids will grow up within that environment for years and be forcibly prostituted as adults as well.
I know this because I've known a few women that have been sex trafficked, since my mom took in and took care of several girls and women (note the distinction) from different circumstances (not all from sexual abuse situations, some were just without housing) when I was growing up.
One of them made it impossible to sleep because she bawled hysterically and begged for her mommy to "stop them from making her evil" basically every night during her terrors. She was a few years older than me, she'd have been 20ish at the time, but I have no idea how long she was in it. Once, it woke me up and I had the thought that I wished she would shut up so I could sleep. I realized, threw up, and laid there all night quietly crying in disgust with myself. I don't even know what happened to her. Of all of the people that my mom took care of, only one of them kept contact. I understand that, she does too. I don't remember where I was going with this...
Ok minor trauma over.
These two characters specifically have situations that kinda sorta pushed them to do AV (explained in the next chapter she wanted to be an actress but failed, his sister had a debilitating illness he needed money to care for). It's not like either of them actually wanted to be sex workers, it was just what they had available. Which is common, most people don't put "Porn Star" on their future careers sheet in high school. The actual sin of this series is just being kinda bland to begin with lol. I'll defend sex workers (though not the exploitative and misogynistic systems that control them, regardless of gender) til the cows come home but this series itself is kinda boring lmao.
