SAO (and Ready Player One for that matter) also had the detriment of authors that don't really understand gamers and lack imagination. The eponymous Sword Art Online game would have been filled with min-maxers day one and the MC would have maybe done a few "world firsts" before being utterly surpassed by his peers, power-levelers and botfarmers.
