To be fair it is kinda a thing in (Monster Hunter) games. Breaking parts does increase the rewards but yeah it's pretty brutal.

I'm more surprised not a lot people know about part breaks in universe. Then again it seems like the modern adventures use special weapons that insta kill enemies while the older ones beat the shit out of monsters breaking more parts.

He was, presumably, not all the way down on the final beginner floor in the last chapter. And then he also mentioned that he did extra work on it for extra stones, which others commented wasn't common info. That probably takes more time and work than necessary when the other option is one shotting something for a stone or two at a time.
