Nah, no one's that friendly out from the get ho in this kind of manga. Everyone so far's been mentally damaged in some way shape or form, excrpt for that archer knight. Who wants to bet that the master's gonna backstab our protagonist? I feel like he's gonna do some garbage like, "I was only teaching this person so that I could steal her mana!"

Yeah, something's being set up. Since this is a violent world, we need someone to take the fall to drive that point home. Could be the master, as someone else pointed out, he was too fluffy and friendly. I also can't trust those rings either, and a magician who is a master surely had to have heard of MC if even scrub villagers heard of him.

This IS way too sus.

I like this story so far, but the pacing is too fast and the chapters are too short and few per arc to get attached to any character. Still excited for next chapter.
