Thanks again Lardagus and friends on /ak/ scans for releasing this chapter!

Who else (other than me) is hearing about Loire Valley Castles for the first time through this chapter? I gotta learn geography thanks to this series XD

Thanks for pitching in XD. As for the M551, dunno. I'm on amateur level in regards of weaponry here, but according to ChatGPT, it does use smoothbore barrel.
chatgpt isn't a search engine, it just puts words together that "look right". It can and will just make stuff up. It's useful for frameworks and phrasing, but not data.

At the very least, i didn't ask ChatGPT whether M551 Sheridan uses smoothbore barrel. I just ask it to tell me what it knows about M551 and somehow it shows up. While it's true we can't always rely on it, but maybe that still comes from somewhere?

In any case, I'm still an amateur here and can't find whether m551 use smoothbore barrel or not on my own XD. So do forgive me, yeah? If you managed to find the answer, do tell us.

welp, I think I've got an answer. I found a scan of an old maintenance manual
https://www.scribd.com/document/347...ssance-Airborne-Assault-Vehicle-M551-Sheridan

beginning on page 1-1 (which is right after the table contents), it has a list of exact specifications, including for the 152 mm Gun-Launcher (which I believe is the main armament). This includes specifications for the rifling of its bore (top left of page 1-3).
that being said... this is a missile launcher, not a cannon... (edit: it has data for both missiles and conventional ammunition. it was both. hance the name, I guess.) it also has a machine gun and a grenade launcher. The grenade launcher has tubes, not barrels...
So, at the very least, models with rifled bores existed. I don't think I am able to show by looking for them that smoothbore models did not exist (just that I can't find any).

Oh wait, I think I found it, maybe? Check it out:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/M551_Sheridan_replacement_process

The article said "The original gun was later replaced by the ARES 75 mm smoothbore rapid-fire hyper-velocity gun" in the ARMVAL section. CMIIW, but I think this part means that the M551 are later on using smoothbore barrel as the result of the evaluation.

Er, the M551 used a M81E1 152mm rifled gun/launcher as they called it, able to shoot both conventional round as well as (at a reduced rate) the MGM-51 Shillelagh missile. That was the only real version of the tank, it never saw service with the prototype 75mm gun or anything other caliber besides it's original 152mm gun. There was never a "smoothbore" version, the missiles were meant to be fired out of a rifled barrel.

Such a quirky tank, to be honest.

Interesting, guess the author knows his stuff lol
Based on the series I've read from Akimoto Osamu, he definitely seems to know his stuff when it comes to firearms. I'd probably call him a bit of a gun otaku.
He puts in a lot of detailed descriptions about various guns into both Kochikame and Black Tiger, as well as Clice.
Although, he also sometimes depicts prototype versions, probably just because it would be cool to see them in action.

A Sheridan is quite the party favor to break out!

Did anyone get the model on the SAM launchers and missiles?
