My guess is that the demons successfully conquered the town.
Then they used dark magic to manipulate the memories and the minds of everyone in the town to believe they drove off the demon army.
Now some demons hide inside the town and have any visitor obeserved and brought to them in small groups.
Then the demons intend to apply that dark magic to manipulate the mind on all visitors tokeep the information about the town having fallen a secret.
Their aim is probably to get important people or potential heroes into their hands when those people visit the town to ask for assistance against the demon army.

Seems like a bit of a writer's flub to say the city was saved by two parents and two children, when Sword Wife stayed behind with the carriage and didn't go near the city at all.

It looks like the little sister is following them around, adding some extra layer of protection as they go.
On the other hand, it seems that the magic academy might no longer be separated into magic-colors. They probably revised their curriculum to follow Leon and Arel's path of multi-discipline.
