Bruh. The light novel has been fully translated for at least a decade now. People read that and know what's coming already long, long ago. So long ago in my case that I forgot and have been enjoying refreshing my memory of exact events with the manga.I see many "just-watch-the-fucking-anime" people here. Let's keep the spoilers to a minimum for those who just want to enjoy the manga.
Because this series was one one of the originators of the modern Isekai genre. The web novel was originally written in 2012 so, while not being the first isekai, it helped to popularize many of the tropes we are now used to. And since it was the first iteration of several of those tropes, they might seem not as refined as other works that came later, but those who are aware of the context it was written are thankful to the author (Know as Rifujin na Magonote or "Unreasonable Backscratcher").i don't understand why people treat this as better than the average isekai fantasy
hard to articulate what's wrong with it. it takes some parts of itself more seriously and other parts less seriously, but the choice of which ones just feels strange like the author's autistic
paul's cool though
Because using the term "average" implies that you have seen other similar Isekai that have done that particular trope better and you are applying an incorrect measuring system to something that was good in its original context.that's unresponsive. i didn't say "people say this is original but it's unoriginal." i'm aware it was influential. i said "people say this is good but it's average," and half-heartedly tried to explain why, and it didn't have anything to do with originality.
you're focusing on how well it executes the aspects of the setting that became influential. that's fine; you're probably right that its setting is more cohesive than the average isekai fantasy. my problems with it aren't related to the setting: mostly awkward or inconsistent tone, and sometimes characterizationBecause using the term "average" implies that you have seen other similar Isekai that have done that particular trope better and you are applying an incorrect measuring system to something that was good in its original context.
It's like saying the original Doom is an average game because others have made better FPS in the meantime. While it might be objectively true, you are preventing yourself from enjoying it by judging it with standards that are unreasonable.
Edit: That said, I believe that this series can still be considered "good" because, behind some superficial elements that might have become a bit dated, there are several core elements that remain interesting to this day (the world building, the magic system, the beats of the story... they mesh together much more cohesively than other derivative works that simply took some of those elements without understanding how they should be combined).
