@DodgeChance He's actually teaming up with criminals, so he's not exactly moralising anything. He just doesn't want to kill, which is indeed naive in a place where killing is an everyday solution to problems. However, perhaps it's a solid part of the modern Japanese culture and social consciousness. Japan is a very peaceful society, not like, for example, the USA where the police are shooting at criminals every day and vice versa. During the WW2 the Japanese soldiers were taught that killing women and children is perfectly okay. You can see a total reversal after the war and the defeat as natural development and a reaction to overt cruelty. Just like Germany was a military superpower during the WW2, but after the war Germany has done very little with its military, preferring the way of the Deutsche Mark to handle its foreign policy. It wasn't until the vast Afghanistan coalition operation that Germany really sent its forces anywhere.

Why do people keep saying the MC is 50? He was 37 when he died. Mind, "middle-aged" starts a lot younger in the youth-obsessed Japan, and the obese version of the MC is certainly drawn to look a lot older than he was... but still, he's not 50, unless you count up his age post-mortem and continuing into his reincarnated life, so assuming he's 7 (or twelve? I'm finding these time skips confusing) his spirit at least should be 44 (or 49, if his current body is 12).

In any case physical age doesn't make for maturity, experience does, and this guy was a shut-in for who knows how long. The thing I find the hardest to believe is how well-adjusted he's acting, hikikomori tends to originate from severe trauma, and whatever *that* was was never brought up nor resolved in the plot so far.
