Rudeus keeps being a chauvinist pevert, but he gets better. Currently, this manga just ended vol 5 and it's starting the vol 6 in both light novel and web novel (didn't read the LN, but I saw the illustrations). I would say that rudeus get 2 minor developments and one major development later.
The first minor development is on the end of vol 6, so stay tuned to see what does the story awaits him. He doesn't get better on this term, but he get a bit more serious.
The second minor development is on the vol 13 on WN (vol 12 on LN). It's a major spoiler, so I won't say anything more.
The major development happens on vol 15 and vol 16 (both WN and LN). It's the best 2 volumes BY FAR, and I dare to say that no matter how unpleasant you find this novel, once you reach vol 15 it will be worth.
No matter what score you give this manga/novel now, after vol 15/16 it will be your previous score +3, I assure you that.
And yes, Rudeus keeps being a chauvinist pevert, altought in a bit less intensity than the earlier novels, but that won't be a problem. Vol 15 and 16 is this story's peak, and the less you know about how the story changes after those, better.

The story's genre takes a huge shift caused by the massive plot twist that happens on those 2 volumes, and I believe that's the reason people ended up liking this novel so much.
