People who think the anime is superior because the manga doesn't "feel" the same is because you didn't understand the story to begin with.
You've been lazily reading for so long, that adding in any extra logical emotions or human reaction/expressions caught you off guard in the anime.

Reading it to the end, I am pretty sure the author started to get annoyed, as originally it seemed he/she was writing a generic isekai with a twist that more emphaized having a "2nd chance" at life that was more adult than what we see with the other isekais (young guy that never really goes anywhere original, always cliche).

The school arc surely must have been a "break" for the author as it clearly was meant to be filler to distract generic readers.

The ending was the closure of that of philosophers and religious scholars, and the esoteric would talk about. In a sense, it's very deep if you can understand it.

Whoever wrote this, started out with an idea of self indulgence, and ended with the renewal of the mind and body.

This story is basically a masterpiece, and it somewhat amazing for how old it is, it only became "known" because the studio really made it "come to life".

TLDR: If you aren't a 30+ yo NEET or "Shut-In", you will have a hard time appreciating such a story.

Glad my brother got me interested in the manga. The anime devolved into male bashing so I was going to write this series off. Man is the manga so much better with so many great female characters. Okay generic comment aside what is sad about the anime is the inability to deal with nuance. Perhaps it is because the human mind struggles with not categorizing people, but the characters have depth and emotion to them. They have driving motivations that inform and are informed by the events of their lives. Painted Paul as a POS, having the elf girl master what took Rudious lengthy periods of practice (where as in the manga she learns it after a year which is impressive by the world's standards), just undermine the later arcs if they intend to stick true to the source material's direction.

Some of the creative choices the anime took made no sense. Why remove the time skips? They were important to demonstrate how the character earned his power and abilities. How all the other characters had to work to achieve their prominence.

I'll not say the story is a master piece like Randomguy01. It has some issues and clearly changes direction on some issues. A few times the colored pages do not match the character's descriptions, such as the the black haired character not having black hair in the colored pages. Yet compared to the anime the source material has a lot more depth to the characters and the events it covers. Anyway those are just my thoughts, take them for what they're worth.

The anime made me re-read the manga, and man, done that in a day.
Its kinda sad seeing people blasting the series just because of the school arc.

I ended up running out of patience, and went to read the light novel, and i'm glad that we're already halfway througt the volume that it happens. I just hope we see their "re-encounter" this year... and, well, who read the LN knows what comes together.

(Warning: probably(?) unpopular opinion alert) Paul: yeah, he's pretty trashy. But people are so hell-bent on witch-hunting/punishing/etc that they can't stand when an author has the "audacity" to try to redeem a character, who may have been terrible in the past. You can sort of draw some vague parallels between Paul's story and the MC's story (from his previous life to his life now). And no, I don't think what Paul did was excusable or okay in any way, shape, or form, it's just most people are too quick to jump on the "shitty people shouldn't be allowed to change" band-wagon. RANT OVER. Note: Just because I think he should have another chance doesn't mean I think his wrongs suddenly didn't happen. He was definitely scummy at times.
