I believe we've already been told what Meri does - she uses her healing ability. She's basically a supernatural surgeon and just being a regular surgeon pays well so what she can do gets her quite the premium.

Hmm...) Converted to USD, that's approximately $16,250. Used bills don't pack as tight though, so you cam probably cut off about 10% too.

The author is obviously going for the "oh man, when we mention the father it'll be this huge thing and everyone will go AGH OMG THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT THE FATHER" like every form of media does to try and increase tension and interest in stuff that could probably just be addressed.
