I mean, I get it. Since just after college she's been a single mom. How many times has she gone out for a girl's night or gone on a date with a guy? (The former a little, the latter not at all) She probably feels like she isn't all that because she's never had a reason to think about prettying herself up for someone else.
Also, I like how Oinomori basically highballed/lowballed to get Ayako to think that swimsuit she ended up picking was "better."
