Seems like Moe is letting that dude's words cloud her mind more than she should.
Curious as to why she thinks a smaller place means that Gotou sees her as "less special"; it feels like a step toward materialism that I wouldn't have initially pegged her as caring about.
But maybe that's also a result of the alleged half-brother's words.
Real shame Akemi showed up out at such an inopportune time, though. Can't wait to find out what she has planned. Because it would be wild if it turns out that fetus is actually Gotou's. Though the last time I went back reading through the series, I don't recall seeing any point where Gotou and Akemi would have slept together that it'd even make sense.
Unless she tries to take Gotou being blackout drunk back in chapter 1 as the "time" when they had sex (which he'd conveniently not remember, and thus would have trouble refuting). Plus, she knows people at that hospital who'd probably fake a paternity test for her if she asked. So Gotou wouldn't even be able to trust results, unless he found a different clinic, which isn't cheap--and he's tight on finances as it is. Plus...I kinda suspect that underneath it all, Gotou would probably jump at the chance to simply "reset" and put the family back together. Just pragmatically speaking, Akemi's family's wealth would be incentive to do so. It would calm Ken down, and it would provide that general guise of stability that he craves for himself and Moe, as well.
Of course.........that would cause major problems for Moe. And I could see it actually pushing her away, making her turn to her half-brother[citation needed] and run away from hom. And that would open up the narrative, creating additional points of stress and tension as Gotou watches his family start to collapse from a different angle--and, it would be over his darling "pure" youngest daughter. I bet Ken would be ambivalent at best, and openly relieved at worst, and Akemi is just nuts and I doubt would just stop her behavior now.
Really, I feel like things are only ramping up. If Gotou caves and tries to keep this family together, shit's gonna go sideways in a big way, though probably in a delayed sense--like undercurrents slowly building up silt and sludge on the riverbed, hiding sharp stones and deep crevasses right in plain sight.
Can't wait to see what horrors await in the dark.
