The Mangaka wouldn't be allowed to show a "happy ending" without a timeskip to her being 20 and I respect them for not taking the easy way out and doing that.

The resolution with the daughter is left for the reader to determine, but I think its good. She's talking about her dad, being angry but you don't get angry about people you don't care about. Her boyfriend tells her to stop obsessing over what her dad is doing with his life, and Dad announces he's home when he gets in. So I think they're mending fences.
