I remember when I was in Grade 9 and the whole celling just fell down lol. One student was hospitalized. Granted, my school back then was no better than a worn-down abandoned house.
Now it's rebuilt completely.

Back when I went to school, the schools had dedicated maintenance men. They would have fixed something like that in a jiffy. I guess in bigger towns, let alone cities, these days, schools might just use the regular upkeep companies, but obviously those as well would handle anything that looked dangerous asap. In the end, if something bad happened to a student due to broken equipment, whose poor condition was clearly known beforehand, it would lead to a criminal investigation and maybe parents suing the school/town.
