as a native Chinese speaker I'm not too sure about using "it" for the dog, feels like that translation is too direct. in English pets are always he/she, no? of course in Chinese we use "it", but it sounds natural in our language and is strictly a non-human pronoun as opposed to he/she, but there is no strictly human limitation on he/she in english. of course this assumes the author tells us what gender the dog is, which is probably not clear
