Does a romance tag require a romance to come to fruition?

No, obviously not. There are plenty of examples where one or the other of the supposed main characters either end up with someone else or all alone.

Or does the work being in large part about the pursuit of a romance, suffice?

It would suffice here if that was what was happening, but that did not appear to be happening here. The female lead sees the male lead solely as a meal ticket and the male also sees himself as such. There is zero romance and zero chemistry going on between the leads, and not even a hint of it anywhere to be found. Neither one of them thinks of the other as anything other than a childhood friend. Well, I take that back, the only one who seems to be interested in romance at all is the male lead's friend.

@danielboredom:

I don't know what Fred's reputation is, and I've certainly not read all his(?) comments, but even if I frequently don't agree with him(?), I've actually often found his(?) commentary to be kind of interesting or insightful in its... romance-writing-skeptical point of view? And surprisingly advocative of healthy relationships, unnecessarily abrasive language notwithstanding.

@FredFriendly:

Our difference in views here would seem to rest then on whether certain key moments have indicated that the girl is clearly strongly interested in the lad and is actively pursuing him (as was my reading) or whether their relationship is strictly that of, well, let's say "congenial lunch buddies" (as seems to be yours).

As it stands, I could re-read it and go point out the exact scenes that made me think this, if you want to hash it out, but otherwise I'm perfectly happy agreeing to disagree.

Dude ignore him, he's a notorious troll.

Hahaha! Thanks for the laugh! I try to have an intellectual conversation with another member and the only thing some doofus can add to the conversation (not even intellectually) is to call me a troll. How about you actually use some brain power and point out in exactly what way I am being a troll with my comments and/or otherwise make some intelligent contribution to the conversation about the actual story?

@pokari

Please don't trouble yourself, I'd rather not hash it out any more which would require both of us re-reading the series. Perhaps if the author continued the work, which I hope would happen, my opinion would come around to your point of view if romance became clearly defined instead of so subtle that, to me, it seems imperceptible. So lets just agree to disagree. Oh, and thanks for the positive feedback. It's true that some, many, maybe even most other posters find zero value in my comments thus I have garnered the reputation of an infamous troll, though I'd rather be called a pompous git. And you can drop the (?) in referring to me. My gender is male.

@FredFriendly Oh noes! I just came and you are leaving already! zannen des!

most other posters find zero value in my comments

just so you know, in many cases when I dislike something in some chapter of some series, I meet your comments, declaring the same claims that I have.

If you change your mind and stay in thread, my usual question: any good points of this series from you?

@Pokari
I could re-read it and go point out the exact scenes that made me think this,

The point is, he knows about all these exact scenes, and why others see romance here, but if you two continued, he would have been still arguing about each and every scene from this list, trying to prove that there's no romance. If you have free time and like arguing in itself, it can be pretty entertaining

And surprisingly advocative of healthy relationships

well, duh. Sometimes. At other times he raises up the "it's unhealthy!" to the max (again, for the sake of arguing), even in cases when outwardly looking as unhealthy relationship can get a passing grade from the rest of readers.

@VINT64:

I don't mind arguing, so long as I have something to say and so long as it's not in particularly bad faith.

Here, I can't imagine going beyond dissecting exactly where and why I was interpreting things differently (which, admittedly, could still take a while)—like, I'm aware that a totally-platonic reading of this is technically possible, without any fundamental logical problems inherent therein, even if I think the preponderance of the evidence suggests amply firmly that the authorial intent was otherwise. XD

@Pokari all this arguing will break down to "how can you assert/deny that she was flirting with him here" about each scene, with arguments at the level of "then why did she blush? Yes, she blushed!". Me personally would do that only if I want to speak about the series this much. As you see, even Fred finds it boring.
And his goal was entirely different. Honestly, he wasn't looking for response from you with your level of adequacy. He was baiting for guys like danielboredom, or, at the very least, me.
If he was a total newbie in the world of manga, I could have said "but this subtlety is the selling point of the series, silly!" If he was stupid, or plain fat troll, he would have been banned years ago. Usually I warn simple guys in DM about his goals and ways of acting, especially when they meet him first time

@VINT64 There you go badmouthing me again, assuming you intimately know my intentions and goals. You can pretend all you want that you "know" whether I'm "honest" or not. Good for you. Frankly, it looks more like you're the troll here than me. I had a conversation with another poster, we both agreed to disagree, and that's it yet, like usual, you go on and on and on about what I dishonest troll I am. So, instead of obsessively talking shit about me, how about you make an actual contribution to the discussion of the story itself?

@FredFriendly haha. Okay.
I like how she didn't let him away and actually questioned him until she heard an honest reason of his worries. Perceptive in observing others while not showing anything about oneself is the type of character that I adore.
I like how happy she was after hearing that reason. Her smile on page 7 is precious.
I am confused that they weren't going home together all the time before. I thought it's a given.
And I like the guy's "I didn't understand even myself", and his thought process. He learns to understand his own feelings
Your turn?

God I can’t believe people don’t see that she clearly wants the D in this manga just cause the hints are subtle and then claimed they are indeed subtle, but clearly too little to the point they are almost insignificant! But looking at their older comments I see them literally mention there isn’t even the slightest hint of Romance, then claimed later they are subtle like WTF!
