@Samhill Yup. Japanese can drop information like it's nothing. In Jap, the sentence probably had a lonely "like" and little else, hence it may ask about people, things, or who knows what.
Doesn't work in English cause we need that information. Plus, who/what already clears the misunderstanding.

@Tatherwood Yeah, Japanese tends to drop the subject when it's thought to be obvious or can be inferred by context.

The reason the misunderstanding plotline is used so much in manga is because, as a high-context language, Japanese conversations are more prone to wild misunderstandings.
