I've been defending this sort of explanation for ages, saying that for series as grounded in reality and down to earth as this one, any sort of twist revelation would be to the series detriment, and that a mundane reason would be best. Yet, I was still a bit underwhelmed by how insignificant an injury the other guy got.

So my headcanon is that he punched the board in just the right way to drive the nail all the way into his knuckle, severing nerves and tendons.

Kagosaki is even larger than Mikoto.

If she had been able to speak earlier, Nozomu wouldn't have to transfer to the other side of the country or, at least, the school would have a harder time covering the whole thing up. Still, after such traumatic event the girl not being functional for a while is normal.

Or the school knew the other kid was to blame, but that other kid or their parents were higher up on the pecking order and decided, he might have tried to hurt this girl and your son, but this kid is more important so the punishment stands, he is expelled for not knowing his place. Happens in the US, I imagine it happens elsewhere too.

It doesn't have to be higher station. The wound was given by a carpentry nail (and those things a thicker than you think) and he was bleeding profusely, it's not something a school infirmary can manage. The jerk probably had to go to the hospital, with the mandatory parents' notice and from there all hell would break loose. Afterwards would be the respective parents' words but the jerk had a serious injury which would end up being the tipping point.

It wouldn't have to be that serious, but don't underestimate a carpentry nail. Those things are longer and thicker than people think and it's not unusual to end with stitches or worse after a bad encounter with one. Judging by how badly the jerk was bleeding, the nail entered pretty deeply, maybe reaching bone. Too much for a school to manage on their own.

I'm guessing that the real reason that they sent him away was for his own protection, just in case Rapey Mkfuckface decided to go after him for retaliation.

Its probably a little more complex that. There is a lot of shit to unpack with Japanese culture, the extreme desire for conflict avoidance, and how personal injury is handled.

By leaving the district, this heads off any charges from the angry kid's family (I think its a little early to call him Rapey. He wasn't even violent until he was attacked, just angry and intimidating). You can't expel a kid who has voluntarily withdrawn, and its easier to approach administration next year after things have calmed down.

I agree. But then again, the "adults" could at least explain that to him you know. Or his friends.
By choosing to say nothing they caused unnecessary panic amongst his friends, irreparable damage to his social status in school and mental damage to him becasue he felt guilty for helping.
Only good thing out of this entire situation is his cousin who will take good care of him.
