It's funny how much hate "My Hero Academia" has gotten lately, and people seem to enjoy reading it to the end to say it's bad.

I'm not going to put MHA in first place either, but Deku's story and the others have always had more to do with "helping others" than "being the most powerful of all". Something that, I could be wrong, Horikoshi left more between the lines than in the main plot.

In Brazil, the joke that stuck is that "Deku ended up a salaried employee (CLT), single and without recognition".

But hey, did you know that the most powerful people are teachers? All Might became a teacher, remember? Some of the heroes in the MHA universe are teachers too. MHA is a universe of people with quirks, and Deku has always been the exception (he was born without a quirk). And those who didn't pay attention missed the penultimate chapter (Deku going to talk to Uraraka is a clear sign of sentimental interest. And I believe that on the penultimate page, there is a discreet image of Deku and Ochaco talking).

As for recognition, I understand that given the mechanics created in the story, Deku was happy - although a little upset - to be a teacher at UA. The last page of the story (the conversation with All Might giving Deku a uniform) only satisfied the fans. But it would be OK if Deku were just a teacher too. Statues are nothing more than representations of desires - and this was a common metaphor throughout the story, just see that the All Might Statue was always a reference to the story - either to be vandalized when the heroes failed, or to be a meeting point and hope for the population when it was meant to be.

My Hero Academia, as someone on Twitter would say, is sort of Paulo Freire's "Pedagogy of the Oppressed" in manga - it's how a person grows up in a universe and learns how to be a citizen within it. Midoriya is a true progressive, a leftist, a guy who would do anything to talk to his opponent before resorting to violence - and he has ALWAYS been like that. Muscular, Shigaraki, etc... in most of the fights he tried to talk, either before or after.

Anyway, chatter aside, I hope the story gets a few more spinoffs to settle doubts once and for all (like the origin of quirks and how the universe of the series came together). There's no need to make a "Dekoruto" or "Shipudden".

Thanks to Horikoshi (who knows if he reads English forums...) and thanks to everyone who followed the series. 10 years of patience... imagine those who read One Piece... :p

This manga stands out to me as that story with official fillers in the manga itself! Freaking so many segments felt like Naruto anime filler. Hoping Kohei's next project has none or less of this crap.

I read it til the end and it's... somewhat bad. :) That's all. I've no desire to re-read it at all. The entire series was average through and through though so there's no hurt feelings here. What was expected was delivered.

Genuine question: has there ever been a popular, longstanding manga where the ending was unanimously considered good/not all that divisive?

We will never ever see an ending like Naruto's ending EVER in Shonen history. Every protagonist must be reduced to a weakling, they must show realistic emotion (crying their eyes out at the smallest thing), they should embarrass themselves, they mustn't be praised by everyone, they shouldn't get romantic happiness, they should never fully achieve their goal, they should always get hindered by something and settle for less.

This is the new Shonen formula. The erasing of stoicism is called "realism." Time will tell if One Piece, the last remaining proper Shonen from the old times, will also fall victim to this new trend. The pressure to comply to this trend is almost always pushed by the editor of the manga. I genuinely think that no one other than the author should have a say in the story.

Manga is going through what Hollywood went through years ago. They are toning down on the "fun" aspect and focusing more on the realism aspect. Then they wonder why people nowadays say they don't really like watching movies anymore, and why Squid Game is the biggest series is Netflix history.

Imagine a minimum wage teacher reading MHA and going "Oh... so he ended up like me...?"
The average person doesn't experience the struggles of the real world and come home to read a manga about the struggles of the real world. People who don't have to face these struggles love to read shit like this and call it a masterpiece, meanwhile it's just depressing and not enjoyable in the slightest.

Anyways, the ending was not complete garbage but it was beyond pathetic for a series that ran 10 years, betraying all the expectations people had for it. Had I been more invested in MHA like some of the dedicated people are, I would fall to my knees. The most 5/10 ending I've ever seen and all 5 of the points are pity points because people have been with this series for so long.

Genuine question: has there ever been a popular, longstanding manga where the ending was unanimously considered good/not all that divisive?
Yes. For Shonen specifically, the ending of Naruto (the manga, not the anime). EVERYONE (except for maybe x & y shippers) was happy with it. He does everything he wanted to do. Brings back Sasuke, becomes Hokage, gets along with Hinata and has a family of his own, never being alone again.
The literal Perfect Ending. One Piece also has a chance to deliver a perfect ending like Naruto's (because Oda🤝Kishimoto). Only time will tell if it does end like Naruto, or if it ends with the "the One Piece was the friends we made along the way!"

Well, it's done, people will complain all that they want but they kept reading and watching for a reason.

I agree, it's not the ending I wanted, or many wanted, but then again, with this fandom, what ending could have made everyone happy? Most of them now'adays have a bunch of what the young call "fatherless behavior" with the shipping, the complaining, the theories, the "cancelling"...

There is a chance that Horikoshi-sensei pulls out an extra some time later, like in Kimetsu no Yaiba, or maybe he will make a whole new work, with different characters but keeping the references to MHA, who knows, only time will tell, we can't spped this things up and Horikoshi I think deserves to rest, and potentially get away from the internet for a while.

Not a great ending, not a bad one either, just an ending. Let's leave it like that.

Thank you for the chapters Shueisha, Horikoshi for making it, and Mangadex for keeping it close to the people.

Thank you and good night My Hero Academia.
"for a reason" yeah because i read many trash manga and this is one of them lmao, don't make up some "secret reason" haha

I want a prequel either following the vestiges, or All Might's journey as the NR. 1

Fucking great, so Deku becomes a teacher with no quirk and gets no girlfriend even though it's been 8 years since he graduated and shit? So fucking ridiculous of an ending.

Really needed more of Deku being rewarded showing he has his circle of friends supporting him more even though he isn't a hero anymore.
Could of had the kid see Deku as quirkless and think he's a loser since to a kid he would seem like he lost everything.
But the kid sees all his hero friends support him and people constantly thanking him and the lives he touched by being a hero then the kid 180s and sees Deku as the greatest hero ever.

I don't see what's so bad about it, after all, the first few chapters DID say "This is my story of how I became employee of the month." Why would you expect any other ending?

...how's that my fault?

You think it's trash, and you read it, that's on you, I mean what does that say about your tastes?.

And you enjoyed it even if just a little, don't try and go full troll on me.

Might not be the type of ending that’d be popular around here, but Deku stuck to his convictions and became a real hero. Also a broke Tony Stark, which is cool too.

I definitely wouldn’t mind seeing a couple of side stories in the future though. Especially with Deku and Uraraka, though hero high shenanigans would be welcomed.

Man, I wonder if TTGL got this much hate from its ending? Or Full Metal Alchemist?

Shippers and OP-ers aside, he’s teaching and inspiring the next generation. That’s always the type of hero he was supposed to be. Also the ”everyone can be a hero, too” angle was a major theme as well.

I was thinking here, reading the comments, about how many readers have that expectation that every shonen will end with a fight and the hero will be glorified.

I don't read that many mangas, I admit. But the ones I like usually don't really generate that much expectation that the hero will come out victorious. It's like they say - they're stoic stories. We don't really need a Naruto or Goku in real life. And those who read Spy X Family also notice a bit of that - despite the absurdities, the story has a foot in realism (and some of the recent stories go much deeper into drama). My Hero Academia is fantasy, but with an attempt to place it in reality (gosh, there were more people with powers than without. Deku, having a power and saving the world, did more than many presidents who say they have the power but just want to kill others...).

I read My Hero Academia from the beginning and I always noticed that the story wasn't going to be a "super shonen fighting game" despite its shell. And it's no wonder I've been following the series to this day (skipping a few chapters, I think I skipped a bit of My Villain Academia and the Overhaul saga).

But it's always been the same premise: Deku trying to improve One For All chapter by chapter, while other aspects of the story were revealed to us (the different union of the villains in each volume; the issue of morphs like Iguchi, Froppy and Tentacole, which was something that wasn't explored much; the Todoroki story, literally a soap opera; among others).

And ok, the story didn't end as "epic" as many wanted. Deku became the joke expected of the "Chads" - but only in their heads, which aren't very different from All for One's.

By the way, the worst disappointment I had was actually with All for One and not with Deku. And let me explain.

His story as a villain was totally simplified. "Orphaned" after killing his own mother, he wandered around with his brother (if I'm not mistaken, he's referring to Romulo and Remus, right?) until he grew up and became more aware of his powers and managed to get something to survive. Reading comic books, he decided to create the image that he would be a villain and conquer the world; even though his brother tried to convince him that it wasn't the best path. In fact, he became a villain and dominated the universe of the series, but in the end he died as a rewound baby. And his "successor" (Shigaraki, also poorly constructed as a whole) also killed him in the end. Many complain about Deku's construction, but I think All for One's construction was the weirdest of all.

Anyway, My Hero's audience is no wonder. If the story wasn't good, there wouldn't be so many people following it, and even more so complaining.
