Anyone else having trouble at times following the conversation? It appears to me they always avoid calling things by name and forces you to read between the lines, though it may all be done in order to stall the story.

It may be by choice. Hard to tell with Nyangii.
In other cases, we have seen that phantoms can appear small if they are injured or lose power, or in Rangii's case, I feel it's more tied to her emotional state. When she acts mature, she becomes mature. When she's childish, she's a child.
