I was under the impression her mother died because she was actively trying not to hurt the humans (perhaps out of fear that it might only make their hatred of them even greater), and only stayed behind to delay them and buy time for her daughter to escape. Or maybe she was just kindhearted like that.

Taking author back lore and real history. I believe Monster can't tell the differences simply we are geologically Locked and thats why we make tribe that create society where we had facial feature. I’ve read somewhere that spiders in the real world have forcefully cooked up ways to escape their mates to avoid being eaten, though take these with a grain of salt, but these can be:

Beating them unconscious then running away, then when they wake up, crawl back to them to continue mating

Presenting a prey in a wrapping of their web hoping to appease their appetite before mating

Leaping away fast and far as soon they are done

Apparently these are a few that’s been observed, very mortifying for the spiders, but that sounds like a fun educational show for all to enjoy!

Think about it like this. You’re a Dark Souls end level boss. You see this weird small creature attacking you, but you crush it and think nothing else about it.

But then you see this same creature over and over again. You still crush it, but it keeps getting slightly harder to do. What’s worse, it seems like they’re multiplying endlessly, and are starting to swarm you like fire ants.

You make the strategic decision to retreat, but more and more follow you and wound you until eventually, you die from thousands of little bites. Since the others like you don’t know any better, they see this and start to fear and avoid this self dividing immortal creature.

Modern creatures know better, but they still don’t want to kick that ant hill and trigger an event.

Both, back in the day humans had beliefs about how they kill monsters, so they drove the monsters near extinction, but now people tell more stories about the scary things that hide in the dark, not too many believe they could actually hunt those shadows now, so the monsters are stronger.

She was strong but the species has face blindness, so it looked like humans were immortal, when it was really just numbers. Plus, with the lore in the chap, Fear = Power. More feared, the stronger you are. Less feared, less strong.
