Wait so her mom had the power to kill the humans but didnt because she thought they were more powerful? Am I missing something? :questionblob:
That explanation on why her mom was easily killed did not make sense to me... so got killed cuz there were less humans? Is fear the source of her power or weakness?
It seems that the existence of the supernatural in this setting is influenced on things like belief and fear. It may be similar to how in some stories, gods draw their power by how many believers they have. But in this case, it counts for humans as well: humans believed they could fight against monsters. It also seemed monsters believed the same way (partially because, due to face blindness, it seems there was a belief that humans were immortal.)

In the modern day, it seems humans are better understood by monsters, and monsters are less so due to being forgotten to legend and myth. But those very legends and myths put the monsters as being untouchable by humans, thus making them so.

Wait, the mother was killed?
Didn't she appear in previous chapters together with the dad?

'beliefs' empower the target of it.

The spiders feared humans because from their view, humans were 'undying' since more and more human keep showing up (it's different humans, but the spiders couldn't tell. Basically imagine the POV of any Souls game bosses)
The humans back then probably saw them as mere monsters to hunt down, not some terrifying figure with reality bending power she wields now.

But now, the humans have mythologized them, creating the image of them that's beyond what they were.
And that in turn empowers Taya to be THAT powerful.

Not the first series to do this, though usually it's gods that's the target of such faith = power (i.e. god/goddess without worship start to lose power)

People didn't get it that it was a Chainsawman reference, in Chainsawman the more feared an entity is, the stronger it becomes, also vice versa.

Since they got mythologized, they became more stronger as more people came to know them as evil entities, which in respect, made their image fearsome which caused them to get stronger.

it sounded to me that, because they weren't good a recognizing different humans, they were under the impression that they were being hunted by ONE guy that just kept coming after them no matter how much they chopped him up. This instilled fear in her and weakened her. Nowadays though, she not only knows the difference, but there's also now a bunch more humans to hear about her myths and urban legends and, like in Nurarihyon no Mago, their fear is her power.
That's absurdly too extreme of an interpretation. WhimsiCat up above understands the actual meaning: They couldn't tell them apart, so they couldn't figure out how many humans were actually hunting them down, then started to be paranoid about the possibility that some of the humans they thought they had killed had in fact survived and come back to hunt them, and from there myths about humans being immortal (if not universally, then sometimes) emerged, and from there it's not farfetched for the spider-yôkai to develop other myths that ascribe far more power to humankind than they actually possessed.

Now in modern times, the dynamic has flipped; it's yôkai that are mythologized and feared by humans, while yôkai have managed to elude human hunters for long enough that their constant fear of them gradually mellowed, and that coupled with the opportunity to observe humans in secret eventually dispellled the myths they had of them, and with that the supernatural advantage that humans unknowingly had ultimately vanished.

That's not her mother. It's her ADOPTIVE dad's wife. Her real parents were killed in the mountains, long ago. Later she met immortal dad, they bonded and then the dad married a human.
i.e. she's her stepmother

I like this explanation. The humans had Knowledge, the spider people had ignorance, and it gave the edge to humans in their conflicts. Even if the face-blindness didn't happen, humans saw Taya and her mom as strong creatures, but not something unbeatable. So with enough manpower, which they were willing to sacrifice to protect their homes from these creatures (also ignorant to the fact Taya and her birth mother didn't want conflict with humans) they assembled a mob big enough to hunt them down.

Now humans believe Taya and others are the immortal ones, to beat them would take some greater power.

It reminds me how in the Dresden Files, humanity itself is both looked down on as food by some dark creatures but it is also a big rule to not bring in humanity as a whole in any supernatural conflict.

This. The fear/belief goes both ways. It empowers humans, but it also empowers demons. This is also canonically how one of the guardian gods was tamed and made into a guardian god (I think it was the manifestation of the East? My memory is rusty as to which, but I remember the general gist).

Prob it took inspiration from the believe / myth that supernatural beings took form and grow in powers the more well known they are (such as phenomenons like many people in japan supposedly saw slit-mouthed woman and suddenly become a huge rumours with many talks circulating about her, but later on the supposed appearance of the slit woman died down along with the rumour).

In Taya's mother era, the myth about supernatural being like Taya and her mom probably only restricted on the local villages, and if anything, these beings fear human more since they are numerous. Hence why their power isn't that big.

But in the current era, even a myth from one place / region can reach to people from the other side of the globe. Some even become folk legend / worldwide known myth. And with those rumours and belief, so does Taya, Usagi, and other being power grow.

Wait, how old is the spider girl...
Man... The age gap is looking wild bru
She's at least a few centuries old. In the chapter where her biological mother was killed, they were being hunted by what looked like humans during the feudal Japan era. We've known the age gap for like 50 chapters lol.

Edit: exact chapter we learned about this was ch. 25
