His main thing is being a respected leader of the yokai. It's the centerpoint of the tale that the funny-looking old man is actually the supreme comander and leads the night parade of one hundred demons.
No the actual source material, as in the only older text that mentions this thing, is believed to have been misinterpreted by modern people. As in, there was a picture for it, and later on some people captioned the image saying that it was a "chief monster", and then even later modern people found the image and text and just assumed it was the leader of the youkai and spouted their uninformed opinion that was believed uncritically by everyone and treated as fact.
Considering the youkai in the picture specifically is known for sneaking into people's houses and acting as if they run the place, the caption was probably a dig just saying that it's a youkai that likes to act as if it's the chief of wherever it enters, and not that it is literally the leader of all monsters.
