What powers him is hatred of humanity. He wasn't dying because he was happy for Taya, but because he felt some kind of positive emotion about a human.

Y'know it's kinda normal for people to not wear their ring, or to wear it on a neck chain or something, if it puts their finger at risk. You see it a lot with mechanics and chemists and such. Taya should adopt a more practical stance on this.
