Genuinely wondering, is this not a common turn of phrase? In the US a lot of boyfriends/husbands will say "we're expecting" or "we're gonna have a baby," even if only the woman is literally pregnant. I guess it's to emphasize that the man will be as supportive as possible rather than just sitting around for 9 months lol.
