Looks to me she got to do both: Had some career success, then have a go at being a housewife. As someone who gets bored of things quickly and takes on many new interests, I could imagine that she felt like she reached a good point with her magazine career and wanted a new challenge. We saw in the first chapter that she's actually quite bad at chores and has been putting a lot of effort to improve. People can have more than one dream...

(Yes, people can specialize in their careers or have one major life purpose--good/fortunate for you--but there's also others like me who want to try out and get good at lots of things)
