thanks as always for the chapter!

first of all i'm deeply obsessed with yatsuda's style of comedy. the little doodled emojis never get old it's so cute and funny

now every part of this chapter just builds off already established knowledge and i'm feeling confident enough to be able to make predictions about a bunch of shit and it makes me really excited

sataki i think clearly is gonna eventually become one of if not the most intensive "moral conundrum" characters in the series. though kyo obviously just went through a whole thing with ryuu and the moral implications of that situation and how he had handled it, look at his position, who's in control of him, and what he even exists as. he doesn't really have the power to be a moral agent in any scenario which is like the entire point of the lack of resolution to him having thoughts about ryuu. meanwhile sataki has always clearly placed in the narrative as someone who watches over kyo, both in the literal sense of the story beats aka it's her outright job to surveil kyo and report back to the government who owns his life, but also in a narrative sense. she's the framework that helps us keep track of kyo's growth as a person and character... really, the lack thereof. she doesn't actively have a hand in keeping kyo's humanity and autonomy suppressed but she's complicit in it, she literally guarantees that what they do to kyo so that he remains nothing more than a weapon works. we haven't seen much of her thoughts and feelings on this yet but i think soon we will. and soon she'll have to face what i think is pretty obviously implied to be an inner conflict between her duties and her feelings about the way they treat kyo. sadly i really don't think sataki will be able to get to the point to actually stand up and do something in time before it's too late for kyo. and considering the kind of person sataki is, i think she's aware of this herself

we're likely to get a similar thing with yuri and him having a very similar if even closer and more skewed, fucked up relationship with kyo. the contrast between yuri and kyo's meal together in the first chapter where he encourages kyo's interest in art vs yuri being the one to conduct the myther test on kyo is very delicious. it's almost hilarious how obvious i can see yuri's gist, in that he has a lot of unresolved guilt towards the existence and position of kyo and he vents it out onto the guy in these really fuckass ways. a completely self-serving man! i SO badly want to see yuri and sataki interact more now with their clear parallels and contrasts

now. i also really love the arc characters yatsuda is doing where alongside the main characters, we get little vignettes of very grounded, down-to-earth, true-to-life stories about just. people. ryuu and kana could be anybody who exists in real life and that makes the little snapshots of their lives really impactful. kana's relationship to the myther was also fascinating and further supports the thoughts and theories i'd been having. the extremely intriguing thing of kana treating her myther IF, chihiro, as a true person, another existence who isn't really there but whom she longs for to be there is very understandable and very tragic. i think it's safe to assume that ryuu went through a similar thing when he was using his IF. kana's loneliness is going to - no, is already dooming her to the same fate. i can't help but think that if only she had a friend who could've helped break her out of her shell, it's very likely that she could've been saved from this through companionship

this is why yatsuda is writing myther about "vanitas." it's a through-and-through tragedy

finally kana and the short scene of her interacting with vani's gang themselves also gives a lot of insight into them. i think i'm gonna just call it and watch me be proven right (the funniest thing could happen eventually...): i think vanitas and his group genuinely, truly, and for vani himself clearly very deeply, care about people. particularly the people they give these mythers too like ryuu and kana, i think the care they have for them is real. and thinking about the conversation we got to see between ryuu and vani, i think the desire to see these regular people who are down on their luck succeed and find self-actualization and fulfillment in life is actually earnest, despite everything. after all their instructions to kana for her to succeed with her myther was to treat the IF like a tool. quite literally kana is going to fail and likely die tragically because she failed to see her IF as a tool. we know that all 3 of them, but vanitas especially, treat IFs like tools and readily discard them very easily

here's what i think! i think vani and his group really do care about people, both in terms of getting attached to and wanting happiness for individuals they see suffering, and for humanity as a whole in the dystopic world they live in. and i think despite that true and earnest emotion and care they harbor, they're aware of the state of the world and have accepted - for better or for worse - that the system in place that causes this endless suffering to each individual person and to humans as a whole is impossible to topple. so the defiance they show in the face of this can only come in the form of indulging in their desires as much as they can, fleeting as they may be, in the vain (heh) hopes that maybe it can mean something or change something. that's why they give out mythers to people who are suffering and want a reprieve. they know what'll happen every single time most likely, but they keep doing it - maybe in part for profit i'll admit, but we've seen vanitas. i think a good part is also out of a real and hopeless care for these people. if these people have to suffer they might as well have a chance to escape it

okay i'm done. let's see if i get even longer next time love yalllllllll 😩
