Honestly idk why Naruto is doubting Shikamaru so much when he knows it was Shikamaru that stayed behind to ambush the sound ninja following them during the chunnin exams. It was basically a suicide mission and Naruto knew Shikamaru did the job and he still doubts him here? This is one of the times in which Naruto’s incompetency as a ninja shows. He’s the slowest one to understand what going on, struggles to be level headed in these situations, and is the first to complain at the notion that it would be a good idea to stop and check the ninja that were defeated by these four to gather info. Of course he gets happy when Shikamaru decides its best to keep chasing because its what he wants. This is an aspect of his character that is unfortunately not going to change anytime soon, and is something that holds him back from becoming a very likable character.
