sigh

As I feared, we're going to, in her "sudden urge for self-improvement"—which is otherwise-reasonable, as a matter of not trying not to be semi-unhealthily dependent!—we're going to focus first on her being chubby and 'unfit'.

Not only as if that's a big problem, but as if it's the biggest problem...!

(I mean—in actuality get it, I really do. If she has social anxiety, and people are going to be arseholes about how she looks because people do do that, starting by conforming to society's image is a reasonable first step. But it's so. damn. depressing. That even an artist who clearly thinks that she looks fine—heck, who thinks it's hot, even—as-is, is still including this as a "self-improvement step" in their self-indulgent care-fantasy... just, ugh.)

It's funny reading this again everyone says she's perfect the way she is. I gotta say I disagree.

Body wise she could stand to slim down. Her being thicc is fine great even. Having fat arms and stomach is not fine. It's unattractive. No amount of your delusions that she's "fine the way she is" will change that. The girl herself is aware of that so understand where she's coming from.

Also slimming down doesn't mean she'll lose her "charm" since she's already pretty curvy girl it'll make her more attractive.

This took me a while to understand.

The reason she looks like that is because she became a shut-in. She elected to look like that purely through the negligence inherent to being a shut in. So, yes, getting a handle on her health is something that should be addressed and is probably the first thing that's within reach to address.

No, this isn't about "conforming to society's image"-- she actually says that she wants to become someone she can be proud of in the previous chapter.

Get help, being obese is not healthy even if it's by choice, in fact if someone is obese by choice they REALLY need to get help, people get heart attacks when they are 29 because of obesity. Nothing wrong with being built a little bigger than other people, but if someone is fat because they can't control their arm putting another burger in their mouth then that's not "just how they're body is"

See, you say that, and everyone likes to say that, but (and while I have no expectations for you given the dudebrah tone you're entering this conversation with) it's completely disingenuous. We don't judge people for literally any other similarly-unhealthy life circumstance they find themselves in.

Like, if a series shows a character lying lazy on the couch all day, nobody goes "ugh, what filth, such unhealthy life choices". They go, "dude, relatable". Even that's significantly worse than being fat as health-indicators go, and much more clearly a decision someone is actively making.

We're awful to fat people just because. There's no fucking reason. It doesn't help anyone (seriously, if being judgemental could 'solve' obesity it would be 'solved' by now, there's nothing similar we're more judgey about), the whole shtick boils down to nothing more than that "fat" is "bad" to our societally-trained monkey-brains at this point, not the paper-thin veneers of rationality we try to put on it.

(How that relates back to the series here is its own thing but I doubt we're going to get that far. I figure I should point out how fucking backward we are on this topic at least once when it comes up, and leave it there—if people aren't ready to listen and think about it, that's beyond my control.)

I'm not awful to fat people, I'm saying lose weight before you die at the age of 35 to obese people, if I really didn't like fat people I would just shut my mouth and wait till they died in 5 years. Also people do understand that other harmful behavior and health conditions are not good, such as the fact that if you read a manga and see a chapter that shows smoking in a good light, you will find quite a lot of comments that say "don't smoke, that messes up your lungs and gives you cancer" if being obese didn't give you heart attacks, then I wouldn't care and I would be absolutely fine with it, but seeing as it does, in my mind choosing to be obese is on the same level as choosing to commit suicide, you know it's going to result in death, yet you still do it. That's what suicide is, isn't it? And I won't pretend to be some white knight with a bleeding heart or anything, but seeing people die an early death doesn't exactly bring me joy, especially when everyone around them is trying to get them to just accept their morbid obesity, instead of encouraging them to lose weight. You aren't being kind by accepting their negative traits, your being an enabler leading them to an early death.
