A poor liar like Theo shouldn't try to come up with lies that are too far from the truth. He should have just said he was experimenting with magic he couldn't handle. Helvi happened to be nearby and came to see what's going on. It would be a "lie" suitable for a lousy liar because it wouldn't, superficially, be too far from what really happened.

Even simpler. Don't lie.
He should just say that he's too embarrassed to tell his lovers' tale to a stranger.
Simple and true. This would match him better than a half-truth that can barely pass as technically true. Because even then he will give signs that he's hiding something.
So he should shut up (though this seems tough for him) and act shy (which comes naturally to him). Nobody is entitled to his private stories. Much less random strangers.
