Well anyway, I'd say if they got rid of the rank system and it was just that MC was really productive at harvesting the special resource that got the guild rich. You could also say he just didn't stand out compared to those companions of his making it more believable he could get randomly fired.
Heck, we saw the DOGE literally FIRE a bunch of personnel critical to maintaining the US nuclear arsenal among other things. So, I'd give the current "reason" a pass, he was thinking about retiring anyway and didn't care to contest it. Doesn't bother me much that he got dumped either, he was away for "work" a lot and naïve the girl was looking for a bigger fish and wouldn't dump him until then.
The karma of being TOO humble bit him there.
I just find it too shallow and I have to "fill in" for the gaps. Though that is 90% of these kind of stories and they fuel my hate reading. xD
