My 2 guesses are she is the childhood friend he liked that rejected him, he already liked her so he sees her as a girl. My 2nd wild idea is she went through some stuff and has imaginary friend of her own

Ain't no way the major fan base are that pathetic. I'd rather NOT insert myself in romance stories. It'd probably end on chapter 1 then.

I didn't deny the fact that these kinda MC are a commonplace in manga. I just refuse to believe that the major manga audience are social outcasts with no good friends to speak of and in bottom of school hierarchy (if that even exists).

Main audience for manga is Japan who has severe crisis in many fields such as jobs, late hours, black company, low birth rates etc.

From what I understand men there feel like there best days were in highschool everyday care free and fun without work stress. So wish fulfillments is a big part of it

"Best days were the highschool ones." Okay, so what does it have to do with being a misfit with no redeeming quality whatsoever other than being unnecessarily kind and saying corny dialogues.
