the latter the better, there is a Manga I am reading that is a mere 56 chapters, but it took 11 years to make, I am glad I can read it all without pauses now, but the writer is currently doing another story in which I am interested and while the translation is far behind who knows how long could that take?
The advantage is that you get to discuss with people as it developes of course, but when will it be done? 2 years? 4 years?

Makes me prefer when scanlators pick older stuff, of course it doesn't mean they will release it at a faster pace, some groups may do 50 pages in a week, some may release once every 1-3 months....an official translation from seven seas might end the story 1-2 years later.
