Basically, in the wake of the mass DMCA strike last year, MD's staff has taken a more hard-line approach to groups making money off of scanslation. Thing is, what publishers hate even more than piracy is bootlegging. And permanently paywalling chapters counts as such. PLus, MD's staff doesn't like that groups like Asmodeus bait people here by only ever uploading a few chapters here and there, and keeping the rest behind their paywalls.

Asmo got warned about doing this, but they doubled-down on it, so the group as a whole got the boot and their uploads were purged because they don't want to attract the publisher's attention. Again.

Well, while the staff have taken a firmer stance, the thing is that they seem to want to treat the site as more of an archive rather than a place to read manga.

I could probably get away with doing a careless MTL copy-pasta translation with no real CL+RD, and typeset in MS Paint, and they'll accept it as long as at least some attempt was made to provide a translation. The bar really is that low. They claim that it's because they don't want to be caught seeming elitist by setting a standard. And they also claim that it's very difficult to set that standard because everyone's standards are very subjective.

As such, it seems that they feel that so long as a group uploads newly translated chapters in a timely fashion (like within a few days), then they're free to keep those chapters paywalled on their own site as well. Because in that case they're not really "competing" against MD.
