Sorry for killing the mood with the meme page, but don't pretend you weren't thinking it too. Anyway! I was quick with this chapter because I was looking forward to it. But starting now I'll be releasing full chapters instead of half-chapters. You can expect the next one around new years!
I wasn't thinking about until ya put that meme page lol

How many chapters away is what you said in the spoiler? By your estimation
for the first spoiler it's next chapter. for the second spoiler it wont happen till a few more chapters. probably within 5 chapters since we've yet to meet Chinatsu's mother. we're currently on Ch2 p6 of 7. meeting Chinatsu's mother happens in chapter 3(there's 8 parts here with the beginning being them going on a date to a crepe shop) then chapter 4 is the chapter Chinatsu's father comes into play and Hajime saves her from him. This is all still in volume 1 of the LN.
And she didn't even know about most of them, real chart would be like something from nasuverse or touhou
i wouldn't say it's that bad, but mainly because there's not that many characters in comparison to the two franchises you mentioned
Yep, better response is to punch the guy in his shitty smirking face. Then kick him in the balls.

But if the MC had the balls/initiative to do that, then he would have solved the problem long ago.

And this gives the girl her chance to step in and save the MC.

And it appeals to sad sack guys beaten down by life. And with the way JP culture works... that's probably a good sized audience.
because despite the way the guy puts it, it's the truth albeit a very twisted way of phrasing it. lashing out is one way of reacting and another is how Hajime reacts because Hajime isn't the type of person to lash out at others due the fact that Hajime can't deny it as false which ended up cornering him. this is compounded by the fact that Hajime feels guilty about doing what he did so it's more self loathing than spinelessness. It's also why Hajime became unable to cry since the incident
If the guy back in middle school was seen as popular at the outset (he's physically attractive and charming, so I think it's a safe bet that he was), then he would likely have had the social credit to be able to spread rumors and torpedo Hajime's reputation, and everyone would gravitate toward him & his word because that's how popularity works.

Especially if it was an established status for him by the time whatever transpired for Hajime occurred. If he was popular in sports (basketball being a running sub-theme, I could see that being the case here), and reasonably good at it, all of that combined with his charm & looks means he carried emphasis among the student body, and hangers-on who wanted to be liked by "the popular kid and his circle" would bend in favor of going along with the rumors and perpetuate the ostracizing of Hajime.
And whatever the actual context - Hajime being responsible for his younger sister's death would be a big deal and very dramatic. Rumors being what they are, all you need are a couple slightly-varied stories going around, and suddenly they become self-corroborating and Hajime can't push back against all of it on his own.

Such is the way of peer pressure in the social gauntlet that is school. This is honestly entirely believable, and leads me to think that Hajime was thoroughly pushed all the way outside the social system of his old school, which goes a long way to explain his lack of trust, insular personality, "masking" constantly at school, and his declining to push back the whole "#2" thing.
You're spot on. both him and Hajime were popular and the guy used this as a way to usurp Hajime's position on the basketball team. The entire thing is what led to Hajime not trusting people and his uncaring attitude towards what his fellow classmates think about him.

In theory, returning to his old hometown and encountering an old friend who unintentionally exposes Hajime would be good. But this dude was a downright supervillain. But something from the JP script that I didn't manage fit into the EN translation was that Hajime was "utterly alone". That kinda implies he was isolated after whatever happened. So it might be that EVERYONE turned on him and not just this guy uniquely being evil... We'll see I suppose.
he was alone in two ways. his mother and father eloped therefore his was estranged from his mother's side of the family and his grandparents on his father's side had already passed away. His uncle who cares very much for him and his family couldn't be contacted due to being overseas and only heard the news of what had happened after the funeral immediately dropping everything he was doing to come to Hajime's aid. There were people being kind to him despite the rumors but no one really pushed back against it nor tried to fight it, as if they were simply being nice to him out of pity for losing his family and not out of general concern. This along with the betrayal is what caused him to lose his trust in people and stop caring about his social life at school

She was dead dead. Brain functions ceased and the only thing keeping her alive was the medical equipment, however even that wasn't going to last as her body would shut down completely within a few days. Hajime made the decision to not prolong it and end her suffering because he was a kid at the time and didnt truely understand what he was doing until after it was already done. All he was thinking at the time was that he didnt want his sister to be suffering anymore.

That aside this is where everything changes in their relationship as Hajime begins to realize his feelings. However they do not get together until winter when Chinatsu's father attempts to take Chinatsu away by force while her mother is in the hospital due to overwork and stress. Hajime saves her then and they properly become a couple.
Holy fuck that dude is straight up evil. Cartoonishly so.
Hang that soulless subhuman

Why does every damn Mc have no backbone to speak like for real? It's literally every damn romance manga.
Hajime isn't spineless. He isn't fighting back because he knows it's true even if it's a twisted truth and he feels guilty about it. This is more of trauma and guilt preventing him from taking actions than being a spineless coward.

Dude was so comically psychopathic that he stood out like a sore thumb in the story. Author could have used a little more subtlety instead of this mustache twirling type. And if you HAVE to use someone like him, at least provide some catarsis to the reader instead of never showing him again. As is, he is just a giant negative.

Thanks for the

No apologies needed for the meme. I was thinking it and it was much appreciated. God, I wish she had clocked him, but this is Japan.

...maybe stepped on his foot or something
Yeah like half of the stuff I see happen in trains in manga would absolutely get you pummeled on the NYC subway

Gosh. I know how infuriating this jerk was in the novel, but with this stupid grin I wanna sink a punch or two in.

They rush the scene a bit, but all the details you need were there. Don't worry, manga reader.
Oh, and more details you need to understand what that jerk said would come next chapter anyway from the look of it, so you can look forward to it.

I just love manga Chinatsu. She's a lot more expressive than the text described.
