It's because graphite is conductive, so the lead from a pencil can conduct a bit of electricity (not very well though, since pencil lead also contains a good amount of clay).The electrical engineer part of my brain is extremely confused but finds this entertaining, so I gave it a Smith Chart to keep it busy instead.

Reminds me of the anecdote of a nurse whose daughter had to be put on life-saving respiratory measures, got an insane bill from the hospital, and called the bluff by asking for an itemized bill. Turns out, the actual treatment cost was around $80 but they were charged $8000 originally. The bill was dropped completely.
