Hero's innocence here is an indication that this is a flashback.
But holy fck, finally some clarity.

No wonder he's hellbent on revenge. It's not just betrayal after the Hero's journey, it's the fact that so much innocent lives (and even worse, the people whom he actually loves) were killed just for him to be abducted, used, ridiculed, and eventually killed. That hits hard, no matter where you look at it.
