I went to Japan recently and yeah the digital money scene is in a weird place. A ton of things and places are cash only. Some places do take cards. Some places do have cash app stuff but like as a tourist it's a pain to figure out. There are upsides and downsides. I don't like having to carry around tens of thousands of yen and predicting how much I'm going to spend before going on vacation, but transactions were surprisingly easier since everyone's used to dealing with cash.
On the complete flip side, when I went to China, basically nowhere took cash. Everyone used WePay or whatever It's called. I couldn't pay for anything for the first few days because I had no idea this was a thing and didn't know how to figure it out, but fortunately I was with family who was familiar with it and helped set it up. After that, buying things was so so so convenient. Kind of wild how different things can be just a bit of ocean away.
Maybe it's just the western bias but I'm still a cards person. The worst of two worlds in that I gotta carry around something that can be stolen or forgotten, some places won't take it, and I can't physically process how much I'm actually spending, but idk I'm not a fan of cash apps and Apple/Google pay and who carries cash nowadays
