I mean, have you seen him in movies? The man is memeable as hell. He was also the first foreigner to teach at an aikido dojo in Japan sometime in the '70s, apparently. That's one of the big Japanese martial arts, like karate, so that could've been a means for him to get on some of Japan's radar even before his movies.
