People often thought politicians are dumb, but if they are actually dumb, they'd already be backstabbed or couped by their rivals. They might be dumb in other aspects, but they are certainly skillful in gaining and retaining power.

The problem is of course, most of them are corrupt since corruption is the easiest way to grow your resource. If you accept a bribe, you will have more money than your honest opponent that doesn't accept a bribe, thus have more money to spend on campaign ads or paying followers.
