Actually I have done it. If your cold lasts more than two days. It evolves into the flu, and can last up to a week. Yes a common cold can turn into the flu if left alone.

It is quite possible to catch two different viruses at the same time, or one immediately after the other.
The common cold can be caused by any of 200 or so viruses of at least four different strains. That is why you sometimes get a chest cold and sometimes head cold or a throat cold etcetera. This also make it difficult to develope vaccine. Noone would like to take hundreds of different shots at a time, for something that generally isn't very severe and lasts a week at most.

Influenza viruses belong to another line entirely, but if you are down with a cold other viruses have an easier time infecting you since your immune system is already at capacity.
