The common cold can be caused by any of 200 or so viruses of at least four different strains. That is why you sometimes get a chest cold and sometimes head cold or a throat cold etcetera. This also make it difficult to develope vaccine. Noone would like to take hundreds of different shots at a time, for something that generally isn't very severe and lasts a week at most.
