Nope. "traditional" Japanese values/expectations is that as soon as a woman gets married she should stop working and be a housewife. So manga usually either reflect that or have horribly negligent parents who both work so that the underage protagonist can be home alone all the time and people can feel sorry for them or whatever. Unless it's a single parent household (the shame!) and the lone adult has no choice but to work.

Given how expensive everything is everywhere, especially in Japan, it's kind of stupid that this idea persists as proper and preferable. I get someone staying home when there's kids, but as long as it's just 2 spouses there's no reason they can't both work and better save up for when they need someone to step back from work. And that's not even taking into account that telling someone they have to give up their career because they married or they're somehow lesser for it is problematic.

It's even stupider in this case because I'm fairly certain they said early on that Juri was the higher ranked/more important employee when she still worked. So it's not even like she left one of those "marriage hunter" paths like OL. She was legitimately a useful and important employee and it's just "nope, you have a ring therefore you have a responsibility to stay home and tend a house that will be empty aside from you for the vast majority of the day."

She was legitimately a useful and important employee and it's just "nope, you have a ring therefore you have a responsibility to stay home and tend a house that will be empty aside from you for the vast majority of the day."

It gets even worse, when you consider they live in a tiny apartment, it seems. What the hell does she do all day? Even if you take a couple of hours to clean it every day, what else is there to do?

I believe quite a few Japanese politicians would like the tradition to change, to help with the lack of workforce. That being said, I'm sure lots of wives do work simply to make the ends meet, for the whole family. Funnily enough, I've watched some Japanese street interviews of Youtube, and lots of young, university student looking women said they would like to become housewives when married. A Japanese employee is suppose to work around the clock, so it's not necessarily an easy life, making being a housewife look attractive. Of course all of those young women dream of marrying some doctor, CEO, or blockbuster movie actor...
