From what I understand scare quotes don't really exist in Japanese. Quotation marks are used like this for emphasis, so it's more like writing it as friends every single time.

On the other hand, in the description friend is the only word that gets " as its punctuation while other emphasized terms use「 and 」so maybe there is actually some meaning there.

i kind of skimmed through it so i don't know the details but basically dude finds a girl he likes and they start going out. however, girl is the type that like bounces through bfs on a whim and ends up with a lot of stalkers and other baggage. so mc decides, ok i'll just kill them. and he does. and it ends up that he kills a couple (or more, again skimmed through don't know the details) people, including the guy that the gf actually liked. who had cheated on her with like 10 other girls when they were going out. the girl had some backstory about how she wanted love but couldn't get it no matter how many guys she dated (sound familiar?) and thought the guy (not mc) was the one. when the guy died they ended up being found out and chased by the cops. mc decided to turn himself in and told her to keep living. he gets the death sentence, and the manga ends on the girl walking away on a beach after attempting suicide. reason she didn't kill herself was because mc wanted to live, and/or to repent? idk but i remember her saying she has to live alone from now on

the reason this one will probably be better is because we're dealing with adults now, not students (hs/uni) so noa (and our mc here forgot his name) probably has something special not many students have called 🌈common sense🌈
