I’m more worried about micro-erosion. The piecemeal reduction of our “rights”. The MD staff also said that ads are only non-intrusively deployed if MD is in a do-or-die situation, which explains the non-intrusively-aggressive “support us” button.

Some of the people complaining are helping cover the cost of the server, note HELPING.
Unless they're paying everything, their bitching and whining is just background noise.
If you don't like it or feel betrayed, for some reason, use another platform and don't complain when you get hit by a fuckton of ads instead of a single small ad that does not impact in any way the user experience.

Mangareader.to was great until the freaky popups started.....then it shut down not too long later.... this doesn't bode well... It's not so much the ad which is worrying, but what comes next... Dang it I wish I had money...

I still don't see the problem. I use ublock but won't be adding any special rule or something to block ads here. I spend a lot of time here freely browsing mangas. If me seeing those (not shady, pre-approved by the mods) ads helps the cause, I welcome it. Forget about clicking tho. I'm not touching that.

Not really sure, but from here your user is orange not purple/blue, in the forums your status is updated after log-out/log-in, but if from the normal side of MD you don't see the supporter status you didn't properly set the connection, @Angry_Panda any tip for reviewing/troubleshoot the connection, I remember there was a post for that but is very late to spend time searching

I understand the reasons and this is probably the inevitable consequence of a chain reaction of events from the large DMCA takedown earlier this year, but now other than not actively scraping scans without permission there's not a whole lot that differs mangadex from your average aggregator.

From what i could gather from looking at a few web analytics websites, mangadex has bled a considerable amount of users from the takedown with many current users now resorting to multiple websites's feeds to keep up with their backlog and mangadex staff now needs to figure out a way to keep these same users that are still here from just up and leaving for the first aggregator that gives them a convenient way of keeping up with their backlog.

Either way mangadex was something special for a long while but i guess nothing that's good lasts forever.
