he's not reducing gravity though, he's reducing mass. Most of his weightless gimmicks hinge on that. He would be a lot slower to move and react in many ways if he literally only controlled gravity.

Magic deals with elementals, not physics. The essence of fire, the essence of wood, etc
The essence of gravity may effect his perceived mass just as well as direction. He could have forced his center of gravity to his head, concentrating all his percieved mass in one location, or erased it completely. Inner and outer manipulation.

The artists is doing a REALLY good job here. You can clearly see the fight and how it goes and even the emotions of the beast as it fights. Even showing how his magic switches between light and heavy by using a small image with a change in colour is really nice.
