Whenever that shadowy, ominous mist shows up seems to indicate influence from the "author". Other characters are probably receiving the same intrusive thoughts that Killeon has recently been freed of, but we just don't get to see them. Cliff seems to be the character the "author" has the strongest influence on, so he's the one who ends up acting the most "out-of-character".
