Perhaps it’s seeing his friend slowly lose his authentic smile, and slowly getting used to forcefully put up a smile to “save” him from the trouble. It’s like seeing a close friend slowly put up a wall around him in order to save your ass from trouble, and that may have put a bad taste in his mouth. Like, the black haired dude could have felt responsible for his friends change, and seeing him actually smiling for once, and although he may have gotten used to speaking like that from hanging with the wrong crowd, I feel like when he said “you finally actually smiled” feels like a relieved comment, rather than it being a “stick-up-his-ass” comment…
