"I just skimmed the novel so from what I can tell it ends without him ever really convincing Nicole that he loves her or making his previous neglect up to her. Nicole ends up being invited to study abroad by Caroline's fiance and he follows her frustrated that she doesn't understand that he doesn't want a loveless marriage with her."

Yeah He need to say he's sorry and he loves her.

Keios is an absolute moron, but I can't say that I like the direction of Nicole distancing herself further because she is reading into a book. It undercuts her own autonomy to make choices based on her own life and experiences. Assuming stuff about your, albeit distant, fiance instead of just asking them straight is pretty bad too.

Maybe she was never really interested in romance at all! A lot of what we have seen Nicole do is just having hobbies and a pretty good time by herself in a society that doesn't really have much space for women like her, rather than bemoaning the fact that her husband-to-be shows no interest in her.
