She’s got a very obvious crush and though this wasn’t her characterization at first, I’ve noticed she’s become a bit of a gadfly…

This really shows its age. Today strawberry daifuku is basically common fare that nobody would think twice about, but this chapter must have been originally from the time when it was still a relatively new creation.

I guess the author wanted to introduce a romance but maybe the prolonged series run forced them to drag it out for drama?

Everyone that knows about Oishinbo would know that they will eventually get married anyway. Yuko's actions are just old-school jealousy that you can find in older manga. And from Yamaoka dennying about the "date", he got some feelings for Yuko, too.
